About us

Edge Arts Collective is a midlands based contemporary art group made up of eight artists and illustrators. Our disciplines are painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, installation and illustration. We regularly exhibit and have just ran our first art workshop for the Queens Jubilee. We aim to promote ourselves as modern artists though our exhibitions and our long term aims are to engage the local communities of Northampton, Lutterworth, Long Buckby and Rugby in the arts and also help foster the local art scene by running joint exhibitions and networking events.
Let me introduce some of our members:

Donna Thacker
Donna graduated from Northampton University in 2010 with a degree in Fine Art. This course gave her the opportunity to develop skills in disciplines such as Printmaking, Photography, Sculpture and Painting. Prior to this, Donna spent four years studying Art and Design at Rugby College by completing two separate courses. During this time here she was given the time and opportunity to experiment with different Medias and apply them in new ways.
Donna is currently a member of two different artists groups, which is makes her increasingly focused on her own practice. She juggles her artwork and busy family life whilst working full-time at a local school, but as she is a incredibly motivated individual she still remains focused on producing new art and uses all her varied life experiences as

inspiration for her work.

Kate Thomas
Kate studied for a BA (hons) in Fine Art at The University of Northampton from 2007 – 2010 achieving a first class degree. She is currently working towards an MA at The University of Leicester in Country House Studies (The Country House: Art, History and Literature).  Her dream job would be to combine my fascination with contemporary fine art and my love for the country house; its social history and fine architecture.

Last summer this dream was partially realised as she was involved with school’s work at Kelmarsh Hall in Northamptonshire which involved teaching over 500 children (not in one go!). Using art, games, a bit of history and fun activities Kate was able to give primary school children an exciting and educational fun day out.  These links with Kelmarsh Hall have developed into an opportunity for Edge Arts to exhibit at the hall in February 2012, which was an exciting venture combining our eclectic mix of contemporary art and the stunning setting of a beautiful country house.

Leanne Gilroy
Leanne graduated in 2010 from the University of Northampton with a first class honours degree in Illustration. During her studies Leanne's main interest and focus was children’s book illustration and was highly influenced in her own practice by the illustrators Dave Mckean and Oliver Jeffers.

Since leaving university she has worked on various commissions and has re-discovered her love for painting. She works with a variety of media and has a particular desire to explore different materials and techniques to achieve a richness of colour and depth so builds the painting with layers of newspaper, paint and collage.
Leanne's paintings still have an illustrative feel and although they are generally representational she likes to take advantage of the ’chance’ elements’ and abstract marks to harness mood and atmosphere. She doesn't conceive her work to deliver a specific message as each piece possesses its own message - as imagined and associated by the viewer. Her inspiration comes from memories and life experiences, not only of her own but of others too.

Jill Wales

Jill Wales
Jill graduated in 2010 from the University of Northampton with a first class honors degree in fine art. Her art revolves around the use of different printing techniques and Jill uses the medium to explore and manipulate the photographic image onto different surfaces. Her Interest lies less in the purity of using one particular medium but more in the suitability of the medium to emphasize the subject. Each technique has its own particular quality.

Emma Carpendale
Emma graduated from the University of Northampton in 2010 with a first in Illustration. Since then she has been pursuing a career as a freelance illustrator.
She is often drawn to themes of the bizarre, the supernatural or themes from historical, theatrical or literary culture and her work is often described as dark and quirky.
